Collection Field Capacitators

Mining tool used to collect ore and bring it aboard a "stripper" or other mining vessel.

In typical ship-based asteroid mining, ore deposits are vaporized by LP ionization lasers. The resulting cloud of charged gas is pulled into the ship by means of a Collection Field Capacitor.

A Collection Field Capacitor consists of two or ore parallel plates are connected across a battery, charged,and an electric field established between them. The field is then directed out from the ship by means of a magnetic array and used over short distances to attract the ionized ore. (A similar, device is used by repair bots to collect "scrap" metals for reprocessing and reuse.)

Note that the electric field strength, E, can be measured in either the units V/m, or equivalently, N/C.

[E] = V/d
(J/C)/m
(Nm)/C/
N/C
